Try as they might, City couldn't break the fierce resistance of their lowly opponents and in the end, were fortunate not to be beaten by a bigger scoreline.
With manager Kevin Keegan sending out his strongest possible side, City were firm favourites to march into the next round, but the homeside had other ideas and took the game to their more illustrious opponents in front of more than 15,000 fans.
Roberts ended a fierce spell of pressure from the home side when he turned home Tony Dinning's low cross after Andy Liddell's free kick, and the home side could have doubled their lead after the break when defender Matt Jackson blazed high over the bar.
But the homeside had to withstand an onslaught from Kevin Keegan's outfit and it needed a magnificent save from keeper John Filan deep into injury time to ensure their famous victory.
Keegan was gracious in defeat saying, "Full credit to Wigan. They worked hard, got the break and hung onto it. They are better than this division and they proved it tonight."
