Helder Postiga received the biggest roar heard at White Hart Lane for years as he finally broke his scoring duck to fire Spurs into the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup after a 3-1 win against Manchester City.
"I'm pleased he scored his first goal," said Spurs boss David Pleat after the match.
"He doesn't know the rules about taking your shirt off. I told him not to score a second or he would get sent off." The game started brightly with Spurs taking immediate control of the midfield as they put constant pressure on the visitors goal from the kick-off.
It was no surprise when Spurs took the lead through Darren Anderton after just eight minutes when he drilled the ball into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the box.
The home side doubled their lead on the half-hour after Trevor Sinclair trod on the ball instead of clearing and Postiga crashed the ball home.
Postiga, the fans and the bench could not hide their delight but the referee, Paul Durkin, spoilt the party by booking the young Portuguese star.
Manchester City hardly got a look-in in the first half but they started the second period well.
However, their purple patch lasted only ten minutes before Spurs took control again.
City pulled a goal back when Robbie Fowler pounced on a rare mistake by Kasey Keller and out-jumped the big American to head the ball into an empty net with ten minutes left.
But Frederic Kanoute scored the third goal in stoppage time to seal Spurs' win in his first game back from injury.
"I think that the score flattered them a bit," said City boss Kevin Keegan.
"Our first-half display was awful but we played much better in the second.
"I am disappointed for the fans and the chairman because they deserve better than that first-half display and this was a cup we wanted to win."
