Manchester City made it into the UEFA Cup second round as they won 1-0 away to Lokeren to seal a 4-2 aggregate triumph.
City took a 3-2 lead into the second leg in Belgium and earned a penalty after 18 minutes as Paulo Wanchope was fouled by home defender Camille Muzinga.
Nicolas Anelka stepped up to bury the spot-kick beyond Sven Van der Jeugt in the home goal and extend the aggregate lead to 4-2.
Michael Tarnat then saw a powerful free-kick deflected wide as City took charge, with Lokeren struggling to endanger David Seaman's goal, despite the impressive efforts of Davy de Beule.
Wanchope was denied by a last-ditch challenge as the Costa Rican threatened to kill off the tie.
After the break, City killed off the game without threatening any further goals and ensured their passage to round two.
The closest City came to extending their lead was a Shaun Wright-Phillips drive eight minutes into the second period, with Van der Jeugt forced into a solid save.
A Tarnat corner just past the hour also caused some anxious moments in the home defence, but the second period produced no goals and from City's point of view, no unwanted drama.
