Manchester City sit on top of the Premiership table for the first time in their history after a pulsating last-gasp victory over Blackburn at Ewood Park.
Neither side deserved to lose a game which was a great advert for the thrills of the Premiership but Nicolas Anelka broke away with just three minutes left to squeeze a winner past Brad Friedel.
City had taken the lead as early as the third minute as, for the second game in a row, Rovers conceded an early goal.
Martin Taylor conceded a needless free-kick but few could have expected German left-back Michael Tarnat to beat Friedel from fully 35 yards.
However, his stunning strike left the big American keeper clutching at air.
An exciting first half ensued, David Seaman beating out a shot from Steven Reid straight to the feet of Dwight Yorke but the striker could not convert.
But, Blackburn did equalise when Trevor Sinclair headed a Brett Emerton corner into his own net past a frustrated Seaman on the stroke of half time.
Tigerish young midfielder Joey Barton restored City's advantage in the 59th minute when he won three challenges on the edge of the box and scored before Rovers defender Lorenzo Amoruso headed in from another Emerton corner just two minutes later.
Chances came and went at both ends before a deep ball downfield dropped behind Tugay into Anelka's path and the Frenchman somehow squeezed a shot through Friedel's legs into the net.
Blackburn manager Graeme Souness was disappointed with his side's defeat saying: "It was a cracking game of football but we gave them three goals with three mistakes.
"One or two of our players had an off night and it cost us dearly." Opposing boss Kevin Keegan was generous in victory saying: "It was a terrific game between two totally committed sides, it was a shame one of us had to lose."
