The 20-year-old striker had an impressive scoring record in City's reserves last season before Kevin Keegan chose to let him join Sunderland in the summer for £125,000, where he has scored 7 goals in 12 league starts.

Elliott represented Ireland's U20s and U21s while at City last season and has been rewarded for his prolific club form this term by continuing his meteoric rise with his senior debut at home to Croatia last night.

And now City are set for a minor cash boost due to a clause which was entered into his contract when he signed for former City defender and ex-Ireland boss Mick McCarthy.

Robbie Keane's 24th-minute goal was enough to secure victory for Ireland, for whom City's Richard Dunne was solid in defence - in particular, racing back to clear a half-saved shot off the line in the 81st minute.
