The form of City's reserves this term, coupled with an injury crisis for the Blues, has seen Kevin Keegan call up a number of youngsters into City's first team.
Wide-man Willo Flood and left-back Stephen Jordan made their first league starts against Norwich on Monday, while Nedum Onuoha replaced Dunne in the second half for his league debut.
With City's midfield ravaged by injury and Ben Thatcher still out, Flood and Jordan are set to start at Old Trafford, but Dunne reckons their desire to prove themselves in the Premiership could outweigh the effect of their inexperience.
"Willo and Stephen came in on Monday and did great jobs," Dunne told the official City website.
"Of course it would have been nice if there were easier games but it is a good way to learn by playing against the best.
"There are enough of us who have the experience for games like the derby but sometimes youthful enthusiasm is a good thing.
"They can show no fear, run around and get stuck in no matter who they are playing against.
"They can inspire and encourage us to play and as long as we are there to cover up for them then they can lead us at times."
United's league form has faltered this term, so Dunne thinks City could capitalise, but he admits Alex Ferguson will try to get his side fired up for the big game - as they were against Arsenal.
"It is going to be a tough day at Old Trafford. They have not been doing well in the League and I am sure their manager will make sure they step it up against us," added the central defender.
"We are confident in our own ability. We have defended well all season and we have scored goals in almost every game."
