Paddy McCarthy, Glenn Whelan, Willo Flood and Stephen Elliott played the full ninety minutes of the friendly, and striker Elliott even got on the scoresheet.

The hosts took a 2-0 lead before Elliott struck on 66 minutes following a good work by Whelan. Elliott, who scored a hat-trick when the countries last met, raced onto the midfielder's through-ball and slotted home after going round the keeper.

The Irish levelled in the last minute to make it 2-2 and extend their unbeaten run to ten games.

Sheffield Wednesday target Whelan, picking up his fifth cap, earned special praise from coach Don Givens.

"I thought Glen was magnificent in the middle of the field," he said.

"We have decent players all over the pitch but for my mind he stood out for his passing of the ball and trusty defensive duties - he did everything that was asked of him."
