Sergio Aguero to give statement on Barcelona future

Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero will give a statement at Camp Nou at lunchtime on Wednesday regarding his future at the club.

Aguero arrived at Barça in the summer as a free agent after spending the last 10 years at Manchester City. But he has been ruled out of action since the end of October as a result of suffering a cardiac arrhythmia during a game against Alaves.

It was initially expected that Aguero would take three months out in order to get to the bottom of what happened and carefully plan things moving forward.

However, since last month, the 33-year-old Argentine has been widely tipped to retire.

The club has confirmed that he will now speak publicly on the situation this week, appearing alongside president Joan Laporta at Camp Nou from midday local time (11am GMT) on Wednesday.

If Aguero does indeed announce his retirement, it would bring down a premature curtain on a glittering career that began with a first-team debut for boyhood club Independiente at the age of just 15 years and 35 days, breaking Diego Maradona’s Primera Division record.

Aguero moved to Spain in 2006 when he turned 18, joining Atletico Madrid where he won the Europa League in 2010. A high profile transfer to Manchester City followed in 2011, making himself a legend in the blue half of town by scoring a club record 260 goals. Aguero left England at the end of his contract last season with five Premier League titles and seven domestic cups.

With Argentina, he won an Olympic gold medal in 2008 and the Copa America this year.

Even before his heart scare, his time at Barcelona had already been limited by injury when a calf problem ruled him out of 10 games at the start of this season and delayed his debut until October.

Aguero has played five times for Barcelona, scoring his only goal in a defeat to Real Madrid.
