De Vlieger bolsters Kevin Keegan's goalkeeping ranks after the City boss released Icelandic keeper Arni Arason at the end of last season.
"I am still very ambitious but I know what the situation is at the club," he told BBC Sport.
"David being here didn't put me off signing. I know his skills, and that he is a very good keeper, but I am going to try and show how good I am."
De Vlieger has won 42 caps since his international debut in 1999 and is determined to stay in his national team.
He added: "Consistency is my biggest asset. I want to carry on playing for Belgium.
"The coach knows my capabilities and being at a Premiership club should not affect that."
