When the 23 year-old announced in May he wanted to leave Atletico Madrid it seemed his preference was to remain in Spain.
That seemed to open the door for city rivals Real but such a prospect was unthinkable for officials at the Vicente Calderon.
While at the Copa America, Ageruo spoke to Argentina team-mate Pablo Zabaleta who convinced him he could have a successful future at Manchester City.
"I spoke to Zabaleta and he spoke really positively about the club," said the ?35 million signing.
"He has told me all about them. He told me it is a happy squad so I'm looking forward to meeting them.
