There is a belief within the Manchester City squad that manager Pep Guardiola will extend his stay at the club beyond 2023 as he strives to create a dynasty at the Etihad Stadium.
Guardiola's current contract is set to expire at the end of next season, with the Catalan mastermind often linked with a return to either of his former clubs Barcelona or Bayern Munich.
However, the Mirror report that the City players are increasingly confident their manager will put pen to paper on fresh terms to stay at the Etihad beyond next year. The desire to create a dynasty is expected to be the driving factor behind the decision, when it comes.
A source is quoted as saying: “Pep can’t walk away from this. He has built a team that can continue to dominate for years.
“He has it all at City, including working for people who give him the freedom to work how he wants. He doesn’t ever have to compromise.
“Pep’s intensity to win is the same, but in many ways he seems to have mellowed. He’s happy.”
City are on course to win a fourth Premier League title in five years and are once again among the favourites to win the Champions League having been beaten by Chelsea in the 2021 final.
90min recently revealed plans are being made for Guardiola to eventually move to New York when he finally does leave Man City, staying within the City Football Group at sister club New York City FC in Major League Soccer.
Guardiola previously spent a year in New York on sabbatical after leaving Barcelona in 2012, before beginning his stint with Bayern Munich.
He has never hidden his love for the Big Apple and reiterated only recently when backing a CFG scheme for new pitches in New York just how much of a place in his heart it has.
“I’ve spent a lot of time in New York City during my career. It’s a city I love deeply and over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to see first-hand New Yorkers’ passion for football," said Guardiola.
"I have said it for many years, I believe there is an incredibly bright future for football in the U.S. and amazing projects like this one will play a part in helping to produce the next generation of young American talent."
