The 26-year-old striker suffered an injury-ravaged campaign last term, making just five substitute appearances, but has enjoyed seeing much more Premiership action this time round.
Macken told teamtalk: "Of course, my aim is to be number one. It's everybody's aim. All I can do is keep going out there, scoring a few goals and play as well as I can.
"If you're not the number one striker it's up to you to go out and perform to the best of your ability and become the number one."
But the £5m signing from Preston believes he can make it happen after notching his first Premiership goal and adding three in cup competitions.
He added: "It's a challenge. I hope and want to grab it with both hands. I had injuries when I first came here at the end of last season and at the beginning of this one I wasn't involved at all.
"I've been involved and started a few games recently. I've closed the gap on the other strikers."
