The centre back has been in outstanding form for City since the start of the 2010-11 season, acting as the proverbial rock behind a star-studded attacking line-up.

Captain marvel: Vincent Kompany celebrates Man City's win over Man United at Old Trafford

Roberto Mancini's side find themselves five points clear at the top of the Premier League after stunning results such as the 6-1 defeat of rival Manchester United at Old Trafford, but Kompany told the Match of the Day magazine that he is nowhere near as renowned as the animated character back in Belgium.

He said: 'I'm not more famous than Tintin - I don't think I'll ever top him!'

The 25-year-old also revealed his shock at the margin of their victory over United, saying: 'I didn't dream that scoreline was possible. You don't go into that game thinking you're going to win 6-1, you just try to win and hope that's enough.

'It was a special game and seeing the fans celebrating afterwards was incredible.

'I looked at the score at 3-0 but then we conceded so I didn't look after that.

'We were buzzing in the dressing room after that - everybody was over the moon.'

Kompany added that while he is confident that City can add to the FA Cup that they won in May this year, they must guard against complacency.

? 'We will hit a bad patch, like with every team, but you don't necessarily have to lose just because you're playing badly. Let's just keep playing well for as long as possible.

'We've got many players here who have won titles at different levels, so that's not a problem,' he said.

'The club hasn't won the title for a long time but we showed in the FA Cup final that we won't let that affect us.'
