Fit-again Guidetti, who has spent more than a year battling injury and illness, is a viable signing but The Potters face stiff competition from Feyenoord, where the 21-year-old netted 20 times in 23 appearances two seasons ago.
A Stoke source said: "Stoke want to bring in at least one striker when the transfer window re-opens and Mark knows all about John's capabilities.
"It could turn into a two-horse race because Feyenord have said all along that if John overcomes his injury problems they will look at taking him back to Holland."
