Valencia revealed earlier this week that City had enquired about the possible sale of their star striker during the January transfer window.
However, the City boss has confirmed that the club had enquired into the availability of certain Valencia players at the end of last year but that they had made no bids for any of the Spanish side's players, including Villa.
"There was interest shown just before Christmas. Basically, we went to them with a view to ask about certain players," Hughes has told Sky Sports News.
"We were told the prices of certain players and we walked away.
"Obviously, a question has been asked to people at Valencia 'has there been contact with Manchester City?'.
"Yes, there was, but it was some months ago and it hasn't been revisited since then."
