Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has given Mark Hughes a target of a top six finish for next season after confirming that the former Blackburn boss will still be in charge at Eastlands in August.
“People see me as a reasonable and realistic man,” says the chairman. “A top six finish next year should be a reasonable target.”
The chairman has also stated that City will not be splashing the cash in the summer but money will be available in the close season. “You’re not going to buy twenty two new players and then win the premier League. I am clear on the areas that need to be supported and we will step up.”
While Hughes will bring in quality players over the summer, the chairman has stressed that the academy has a major role to play in the future. “We will not forget our academy. It is key to our discussions.” In reference to Stephen Ireland and Nedum Onuoha, Khaldoon says “We have all seen what they have done since getting into the side and there are more in the academy.”
The City supremo also paid tribute to the fans, saying they are the ‘heart and soul’ of the club and telling them to look forward to enjoying the good times they deserve. “They have stuck with the club through the hard times and the good times. I appreciate their support. It will be rewarded in years to come.”
