"I have told Darren that he is still very much in the picture at Maine Road as far as the first team is concerned," Keegan told the Manchester Evening News:
"Darren asked if he could play for the reserves and I readily agreed to his request.
"Some senior players might sulk if they are picked for the reserve team, others see it as a chance to prove a point and Darren comes into that second category," he said.
"He was given the first shot at securing a senior place at the start of the season but it didn't work out as well as we hoped.
"He has still been a regular in the senior squad as substitute but I accept it has been hard for him to make much of an impact when coming on for the final few minutes.
"But his attitude has been first-class, on and off the field. He is such a helpful, co-operative lad.
"He is a member of the players' committee and if there is anything needs organising, he is the first to volunteer his time."
