Former Manchester City star Mike Summerbee said Broadis was still revered at the Premier League club, where he played 74 times, scoring 10 goals, in 1951-53.

Mike Summerbee: “The word legend is used too much to describe players these days, but Ivor Broadis is a real soccer legend.

“I saw him play quite often as a young boy and he really sticks in my mind.

“He was a fantastic footballer and a real gentleman. I would put him in the same bracket as Sir Stanley Matthews.

“Everyone at Manchester City wishes him well for his 90th birthday. It was a real pleasure for me to meet him recently when he was down watching a game and we hope he will be back soon.

“To play football at the level he did as a forward, it’s great to see him looking so well.

“He is respected by every club he played for and I would say he would have been a star if he was playing today.

“The pitches and conditions were terrible when he played, but now they’re like bowling greens. With his pace and ability, he would have been a joy to watch.”

Manchester City have given their backing to trial controversial measures that incorporate safe standing at the Etihad Stadium.d

The Football Supporters' Federation (FSF) has become increasingly vocal in wanting to bring back elements of terracing with the Premier League champions, West Ham and Aston Villa all behind the move.

A club spokesman said: "Manchester City Football Club is supportive of initiatives to enhance - safely - our fans' match-day experience, if supported by the appropriate football authorities."

The FSF's Safe Standing Campaign is supported by clubs of all divisions including Brentford, Bristol City, Burnley, Cardiff City, Crystal Palace, Derby County, Doncaster Rovers, Hull City, Peterborough United, Watford, AFC Wimbledon, the Scottish Premier League, the Safe Standing Roadshow and Stand Up Sit Down.

They are calling for the introduction of a pilot of 'railed seats' - new standing technology which are used in Germany. They are metal seats that can be folded up to create wider clearways.

Aston Villa and Peterborough United have already given the nod to a small scale trial of the technology.
