The FA have confirmed they will look ‘very closely’ at the incidents involving City striker Emmanuel Adebayor during the 4-2 victory over Arsenal.
Adebayor appeared to rake his studs along the face of Robin van Persie after the Arsenal striker had made a rash and unsavoury challenge on the City man. No action was taken by the referee but van Persie received treatment on the pitch.
Later in the game, Adebayor scored City’s third goal and ran the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the visiting Arsenal fans, who then threw a number of objects at their former hero before the City stewards calmed the situation, although a steward required hospital treatment after being knocked unconscious by one of the objects thrown by the Arsenal fans.
After the game, Adebayor accepted responsibility for his actions and apologised for his behaviour, stating that his emotions took over. But the van Persie incident will be the one the FA will look at. The Dutchman flung himself into a tackle which, in fairness could have injured the City man but Adebayor appeared to aim his foot towards van Persie and the Dutch striker’s bloodied face indicate that he may have made some sort of contact.
The FA will make its decision on whether to take further action early next week.
