A 2-0 defeat by Dynamo Kiev in the last 16, first leg tie leaves them facing an uphill task in their bid to progress in the Europa League.
De Jong believes the match was a good learning process for City, whose only threat came with the score at 1-0 when Yaya Toure saw his shot turned away by the goalkeeper.
De Jong said: "We have a lot of individual qualities in the team but it takes time to get together as a team."
