The Whitecaps' Empire Field was unable to stage Saturday's match against Real Salt Lake after heavy rain left the temporary grass pitch waterlogged.
Officials from the Canadian club were optimistic the match against City would get the go-ahead, after extensive work to clear water from the pitch, with an inspection scheduled for 1.30pm locally - 9.30pm BST.
Whitecaps chief executive Paul Barber said: "We continue to assess and monitor the pitch and make adjustments and improvements to the current conditions to ensure that the surface is playable for this evening's match.
"We remain optimistic that tonight's friendly will go ahead as planned, and we'll keep our supporters updated throughout the day."
The match is scheduled to be played at 3am BST.
