Liverpool will be hoping City can give them a helping hand and win at Old Trafford on Sunday after giving the blues a boost to their Europa League hopes.
The reds beat West Ham 3-0 at Upton Park to move to the top of the table and hope City will repay them in kind to keep them there. A win for City will send them above Fulham goal difference after the West Londoners moved into seventh, beating Aston Villa 3-1 at Craven Cottage.
If City are to have an influence on the destinantion of the title, it won't be the first time they will scupper United in the process. In 1992, City visited Old Trafford as their neighbours were challenging Leeds United for the title. Ryan Giggs gave United a first half lead before Neil Pointon was sent off for a high challenge on Giggs.
Towards the end of the game, David White burst into the United penalty area and was uphended by Steve Bruce. Keith Curle stepped up and blasted the penalty into the top corner to earn a deserved point for ten man City. White had another opportunity to win it near the end but skewed his volley wide.
The match game just one week after City had gifted United a chance to win the league by hammering Leeds 4-0 at Maine Road. Leeds went on to win the title by winning four and drawing one of their remaining games, including a 3-2 win at Sheffield United, where blades and former City defender Brian Gayle helped by scoring an own goal. He may have worn red and white but he had blue blood in his veins.
City fans will be hoping they can put a dent in United's title charge again and claim the derby bragging rights until next season.
