Match Preview
Manchester City travel to Germany to take on Borussia Dortmund in their final game of this seasons Champion's League.
City have failed to qualify for the knock-out stages of the prestigious European competition for the second season running, after a string of poor results at home and on the road against opponents Real Madrid, Ajax and Dortmund.
Roberto Mancini will not be impressed by the manner in which Manchester City have limped out of this seasons competition. But will see salvation for his team in the form of the Europa league, although progressing into Europe?s second tear competition will be no mean feat, with German champion's Dortmund standing in their way.
Their cause may be helped by the fact Borussia Dortmund have already qualified as group winners, due to their superior head-to-head result against Real Madrid. But they will still need Jose Mourinho's men to do them a favour and beat third placed Ajax in order to maintain some dignity and progress into the Europa League round of 32.
Manchester City have been in good form domestically this season, though. As they are yet to lose a single game at home or away. But with a number of recent draws it is bitter rivals Manchester United who sit top of the Premier League table.
Manchester City: Last five results
Manchester City 1 ? 1Everton
Wigan Athletic 0 ? 2
Chelsea 0 ? 0
Manchester City 1 ? 1 Real Madrid
Manchester City 5 ? 0Aston Villa
The German champion's currently sit third in the Bundesliga table, 11 points behind runaway leaders Bayern Munich. Dortmund's recent form however has been fairly impressive. Going unbeaten in 11 matches in all competitions, including ties against Real Madrid and Ajax.
Borussia Dortmund: Last five results
Bayern Munich 1 ? 1
Borussia Dortmund 1 ? 1 Fortuna Dusseldorf
Mainz 1 ? 2
Ajax Amsterdam 1 ? 4 Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund 3 ? 1 SpVgg Greuther Furth
Three players who will definitely miss the tie for Dortmund are Neven Subotic who went off with a hip problem late on against Bayern, Sebastian Kehl and Sven Bender. Gotze and Lukasz Piszczek have minor injury problems, while Jakub Blaszczykowski is suffering from a heavy cold.
Manchester City's injury list seems to be growing by the week, with Aleksander Kolarov and David Silva the latest players to be sidelined. Joining team-mates James Milner, Jack Rodwell, Gael Clichy and Micah Richards.
Likely line-ups
Borussia Dortmund's squad is littered with top quality players, from Robert Lewandowski to Mats Hummels. But the one player they'll be hoping is fit for tonight match will be 20-year-old starlet Mario Gotze. The German international has been in fine form for so far this season, scoring five goals and laying on three assists in just 13 games in the Bundesliga. The young German is now much in demand from Europe?s top clubs, with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Arsenal all interested in signing the potential world-beater.
I would normally pick David Silva as Manchester City's star player but as the mercurial Spaniard is a doubt for Mancini's side I?ll go with the lethal Sergio Aguero. He is one of the world's most highly rated strikers and draws obvious comparisons with his father-in-law Diego Maradona. The Argetine has scored five goals for City this season in the Premier League. Helping the sky blue's stay unbeaten at home and away domestically.
Prediction
Borussia Dortmund 3 ? 1Manchester City
I'm predicting another miserable night in the Champions League for Roberto Mancini's side. Losing against Dortmund will see Manchester City finish bottom of their group. The Ultimate embarrassment for the mega rich club. A brace from the Polish international Robert Lewandowski and a late goal for Marco Reus to finish City off. Aguero to get the only goal for the Manchester Club.
