Hughes the man to manage City cash

City's prospective new owner Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim has said we'll be targeting the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo (for £120m!), Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas in January.
Executive chairman Garry Cook then suggested there'd be no limit to the Blues' spending power in the next transfer window.

But thankfully Hughes has pointed out that money alone may not be enough to lure the game's biggest talent to City.

"There are obviously exceptionally-talented players out there that we would like to think we can bring here, if they are made available by their clubs," he said.

"The difficulty will be to get their clubs to release such quality players. If we are talking about players involved in the Champions League then their clubs are not receptive to losing their players in January.

"It might be more difficult than people think. We'll look at targets that we think we can realistically get."

Fabregas has already told the Telegraph, "it would be suicidal for my career to move to City at 21," while United's chief exec David Gill today told Radio 5 Live, "I can't believe he (Al-Fahim) is serious at those levels and anyway, we are not looking to sell our best players."

City also made a cheeky bid for Valencia striker David Villa on deadline day but their president Vicente Soriano has said we'll have to pay his £121million release clause, with his agent, Jose Luis Tamargo, adding: "He has never wanted to play in English football."

Exciting as it is to think we'll have enough money to buy any player in the world, I only want to see us signing players that actually want to play for us.

Robinho doesn't, but at least he is the right age and he feels he has something to prove - to Real Madrid for wanting to ditch him for Ronaldo and to Chelsea for not stumping up Real's asking price.

He is more than just a name, too, as his dribbling ability will cause havoc in most defences, it will create chances for others and be a huge asset to the team - he'll be making a massive contribution rather than just doing a job and picking up his mammoth wages.

And Hughes has made it clear he doesn't want just anybody. He wants people that will settle into their new surroundings at City and fit into his game-plan.

"I think the fans are right to be optimistic, but it takes time to build a team and we have to make sure that the balance of the squad is right," he said. "That's my job, but we'll get there as quickly as we can."

"We'll still look for good, young players who will gain value because that is what I always think is the right thing to do. We'll make sure that we get the right players for the right positions.

"My role does not really change," Hughes added. "Maybe the sums of money and the means to get a different level of player changes, but the same mindset is here, and that's bringing players that will help build a team and the club."

The money we are set to have at our disposal is obscene so it's important we have the right manager to spend it and I think in Hughes we have the ideal man.
