Feature: How things change

Before our early exit from the UEFA Cup I wrote how it would be disastrous if we were to be knocked out. Well, how little I knew.

Five months on and we're on the verge of relegation, waiting for Leeds to snatch another unjust win to leave us marooned in the dropzone. Well, should know by now to expect the unexpected with City.

Those days dreaming of Euro glory and Champions League qualification seem long gone as we face up to the reality that we could quite easily find ourselves back in the Nationwide in a couple of weeks.

Despite our awful run, I still felt we'd do enough to keep us clkear of a relegation scrap. But after the dismal 3-1 home defeat to Southampton, a relegation scrap is very much on.

It would take something miraculous for Leicester or Wolves to stay up so I think it's between us and Leeds. Portsmouth seem to be clear after last week's win.

One of the most disturbing points is that the City team will have known what position they were in after Pompey beat the rags but they still couldn't get a win. They couldn't even put in a decent performance.

Yet I think the players revolt in the week offers cause for renewed hope. Those overpaid, has-beens may not be too concerned about lifting any silverware at City but it's good to see that at least they want to salvage some pride from their ill-fated move to Eastlands.

Let's hope the crisis meeting and the honest words of Joey Barton will spark some urgency amongst the City ranks, preferably starting at Leicester. Because if we suffer defeat there today then it really will be disastrous.
